NEW ARIZONA ADVENTURES
Unique weekend adventures!
Perry MesaFeb 22, 2015 Sunday 9a - 4p
40 miles North of Phoenix - Arizona
4-Wheel Drive Needed - "Carpooling" Available
The area known as Perry Mesa, located 40 miles north of Phoenix, was occupied by prehistoric farmers living in large aggregated villages from approximately A.D. 1275-1450.
The region abounds with the remains of these prehistoric farming systems. The archaeological record of Perry Mesa exemplifies a pattern that occurred throughout central Arizona in the thirteenth through fifteenth centuries. Groups moved from valleys to upland areas, where they aggregated into relatively large pueblo villages and devoted considerable attention to defense and long-distance trade. On Perry Mesa, hundreds of archaeological sites exist within a distinctive natural landscape.
Spend the day on a wild adventure, and see for yourself the amazing Perry Mesa Wall – hundreds of pictographs and petroglyphs dating back hundreds of years. Do NOT forget your camera!!
Memorial Day Weekend CLICK
Betatakin Indian Ruin HikeMay 23 - 25, 2015 Memorial Day Weekend.
Navajo Monument National Park - Arizona
NorthEast of Tuba City (Between Tuba City & Kayenta)
The 8:15 A.M. Betatakin Tour is a strenuous 5-mile round-trip hike and takes 3 to 5 hours. Begins at 7,300 ft. elevation; loses and regains 700 feet (218 meters). Wear sturdy shoes and bring 2 liters of water. Camp Saturday night – we will drive to the trail head following the ranger from the Visitor Center.
Betatakin ruins were occupied beginning around 1267 and abandoned less than 25 years later, around 1286. Its original inhabitants were what archaeologists now call the Kayenta Anasazi, or the Ancestral Puebloans.
The Hopi call these people the Hisatsinom, which basically means The Old People, or Our Ancestors. The Hopis have several stories about why their ancestors left the area, including a preordained migration, being chased out by a giant snake, and being driven out by others.
Archaeologists would agree with the being driven out, to some extent, but would also add drought, famine, and changes in weather patterns.
This event happens only once a year! CLICK
Archaeoastronomy 3-Day Adventure/WorkshopFriday, June 5 to Sunday, Jun 7, 2015
Grand Canyon - South Rim
Presented by the Grand Canyon Field Institute
Many ancestral cultures had a highly sophisticated understanding of astronomy, one that often surprises today’s archaeologists and archaeoastronomers with its precision. The prehistoric inhabitants of the Grand Canyon region were no exception. Their ability to comprehend celestial patterns is evidenced by artifacts and art left behind.
This inter-active workshop adventure will help participants understand how ancestral cultures used astronomy to improve their lives through everything from planting to seasonal migrations.
3 Day Itinerary:
♦Day 1 Introductions and the Sun, the moon and other celestial objects
♦Day 2 Puebloan and Native Cultures of the Colorado Plateau
♦Day 3 Maya vs. Gregorian calendars
